You find
often in the garden of fuchsia-lovers also a shrub-looking begonia with flowers which
something are looking like fuchsias. That is the Fuchsia
Begonia which in The Netherlands is more well known
under the latin denomination Begonia fuchsioides or Begonia foliosa var.
miniata. Also in my garden there was standing for a year such a plant. Of this
version with dark red flowers I didn't found a photo on internet, but well the above
standing rose version Begonia fuchsioides rosea. Wath I well noticed was that
a species with flowers, that are looking more like the flower form of a fuchsia,
namely Begonia boliviensis (see photo right under). The natural distribution area of Begonia
fuchsioides is from Venezuela till Columbia. And in those countries there occurs
species of the fuchsia, with are pollinated by hummingbirds. It is possible the form of
the flower is adjusted on pollinating by hummingbirds. Like all 900 known begonia
varieties isn't that by Begonia fuchsioides necessary. The plant has namely
separate male and female flowers on the same shrub.
They grow out till a height of
about 1 m. The rich flowering plant desires a light standing-place and isn't winter hardy
(USDA-zone 10-12).
