Dependent of the structure of the soil, planting out in May directly in the border can have as well advantages as dis-advantages. My obtained experiences with it are based on the structure of the soil in my own garden. There the plants are standing in sandy soil and at some places also in sandy-clay soil. On the other hand the following is also based on experiences, we have acquired on the testing ground with winbter hardy fuchsias in Velp. And the experience givens with planting out in clay soil, are obtained from a member out of our regio with a garden in Gendt.

The difference in growing out of fuchsias in sandy-soil with respect to that of clay is that the plants in clay faster are growing than in sand. In clay you must proceed something cautiously by digging out while through the wight of the attaching clay the roots easely break off.

By planting out the plants come without pot in the border and then with the upper side of the clod about 5 cm under the adjacent surface of the soil.

Dis-advances

A first dis-advantage is that the plants aren't to remove more lateron, they also cann't be turned on their standing-place. That means at the same time that such plants aren't more

suitable lateron to send to matches or shows. And during the season you cann't make changes in the drawing up of the plants in the border. When certain fuchsias have grown to fast or in each other only pruning back, it is a possibility to obtain a well-balanced presentation of the plants.   Therefore plant them wide out of each other and take into consideration, that they grow direct planted in the border larger than in a (dig in) pot. When unexpected a plant might die, there excist in the border a hole when there isn't then available a reserve-plant in pot. When the plants in autumn must been pruned, they must remain standing in the
border still a week. In the border pruned plants namely are 'bleeding' much more out of the incised wounds.

Advantages
An important advantage of planting out directly in the border is, that they become to stand never too wet and that there then didn't appear root rot. They grow up more strong and the leaves have constant a good colour while they meet always well food and minerals in the soil, certainly when you works through the soil some old cow-manure once in the two à three years. But take care, don't use to much manure, otherwise there exist many leaves, the plants become to large and they flower late but than well with many flowers.  One wheelbarrow cow-manure on 5 à 6 m2 is sufficient. Giving fertilizers lateron in the season isn't necessary.

Giving water is only one time in one à two weeks necessary, how warm it also is. When it is warm weather, the plants appreciate it when then some water becomes spruced under the plants. Then do that in the evening-hours (there exists so a higher humidity, what is good for flowering). When you spruce do that then during one to one and a half hour and by favourite, under the plants. Otherwise the branches can break down under the weight of the attacking water.

By planting directly in the border they withstand better standing in the sun, while the potclod doesn't become so warm and also the water is carried off much more gradual. While there is always sitting humid in the surrounding soil, the clod never is standing too dry.

It is attracted attention to me that the plants, standing in the border are less been incommoded by diseases. This comes probable while the plants get more minerals.

I miyself find still a great advantage from a part with fuchsias, planted out directly in the border, that I can pay attention more time to my pots with plants for matches.
