E.'La Flore des Serres et Jardins de l'Europe' of L.Van Houtte

To Dutch version

After that he had done some years practice in France and after an expedition in Brazil Louis Van Houtte (1810-1876) established himself in 1839 in Gentbrugge in Belgium. He established there with his managing partner the nurseryman Adolf Papeleu (1811-1859) a nursery trade. Van Houtte's knowledge about botany, his commercial attitude and a good knowledge of languages took care of that with him came before a progressive generation horticulture men. Till that fame contributed his remarkable company catalogues and the by him published remarkable series of colorplates 'La Flore des Serres et Jardins de l'Europe' (contains more than 2000 plates).
About 1870 Van Houtte owned the most flourishing nursery company of his country with an area of 14 ha, with on it among other things 50 serres. Famed was the Victoria regia-serre in which was breeded for the first time on the European continent this exotic waterplant outof the Amazone-area. From 1854 he also was mayor of Gentbrugge. After he died in 1876 his son continued the trade.
He brought in commerce rather some new rose varieties. However many new fuchsia varieties didn't stand on his name. In old nursery catalogues (among other things that of Lemoine) he is named as the author of 'Syringeaflora' (1849) and 'Variegata' (1853). Further information of these fuchsias, which aren't now still longer in trade, I couldn't find. Syringeaflora' is a cultivar that looked at form to the outside like F.arborescens (Sims 1825).
