From history of the fuchsias - Part V |
Go to Dutch Version
Henderson was the first who succeeded in growing a
fuchsia with perfect well formed double flowers. It was a cultivar out
of the series of the dark varieties, as a rule known as 'Hendersonii'.
On this followed soon in 1853 out of the series of the
light varieties,'Carnea
Plena'
from Lemoine outof Nancy.
Still other double ones were grown by the same
Lemoine and by Dubus in
France, and further by Dender
in Germany; but yet their efforts
and results stand in this respect at the back of by those of the
nurseryman Cornelissen,
outof Bruxelles, to whom the earnings in the domain of
the Fuchsia-culture belong to become notified very high. and
that would become still more appreciated, when one couldn't reproach
him, that he brought into commerce his grown novelties
with too little criticals. |
. |
The single and double fuchsias with white corollas
became, like the double ones with red and purple flowers, received
by the public with enthusiasm . In 1863
people
knew no less than 9 cultivars with white
corollas,from which 5 were presented
by Cornelissen and the
remainings by Henderson.
In 1864 the number rised till 16
and
in 1865 till 20, of
which two-third with double flowers. Besides Cornelissen
and Henderson, had
also
Banks, Lemoine, Crousse and
others a part in this increase.
But wath in 1865 was
delivered byTwerdy surpassed that of
concurrents more than in one respect. |
'Meteor'
- EA remarkable and variegated from
Cornelissen out of 1862 (Syn.
'Autumnale') |
|
'Novelty'
- A cultivar with upstanding flowers of
the nurseryman Williams jn 1862 |
|
|
|
All wath this nurseryman brought in commerce in
the past time, distinguished by being complete
double of the corolla, in contrast till the
fuchsias of the Englishmen, ,that as usual
was delivered with a single corolla. |
In France people went back in 1865
till species and
apply themself to win these new cultivars.
For that purpose became
F.corymbiflora
and
F.microphylla
chosen. Of each of both species
remained
Boucharlat,
Dender and Barlet 4 new
varieties. |
Besides fuchsias with nice flowers ,
there became also delivered in the past years varieties
with nice leaves. As such we name'Meteor'
from Cornelissen,
that caused in 1862 much
commotion ,and by the golden and red colour
gradations attract attention of every one. In 1864
people knew allready 5 and in
1866 allready 7 of those fuchsia
with nice leaves. |
The culture of the fuchsias seems recently to be entered
in so far a new period of development after the Englishman Williams
has succeeded in growing 'Novelty',
a variety with straight upstanding flowers in clusters.
However, it is to hope, that the antique fuchsia with
bent branches and overhanging flowers, which on such a high in a large
measure of elegance may made lay claim to. |
